Science Based Nutrition

SBN uses a combination of tools to identify areas of the body that might need nutritional support. It includes a comprehensive symptom survey, comprehensive blood chemistry, urine and stool analysis, and may also include hair analysis for toxic elements.

This allows the practitioner to establish a baseline of biomarkers to track the health and nutritional needs of an individual. This offers a clear plan for determining and monitoring nutritional recommendations. In conventional medicine practice, most blood tests are reported using an established clinical range. If you are within the clinical range, you are considered normal. This does not necessarily mean you are healthy. We look at the test results more closely, healthy vs optimal vs clinical as well as clinical associations. We want to be able to see trends and deal with them before they become clinical.

The Autonomic Nervous System

The basic life-sustaining functions of the body are controlled by the ANS. Some of the systems controlled by the ANS are:

  • The heartbeat
  • Heart rate
  • Blood pressure
  • Body temperature
  • Respiration
  • The turning on and off the function of cells, glands, and organs
  • Maintaining acid/alkaline balance of the blood, saliva, and urine
  • Digestion of food
  • Balancing glandular functions
  • Stimulating and inhibiting the body

The ANS is divided into two parts:

Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS)
Parasympathetic Nervous System (PSNS)

When the body detects danger, the SNS, or the arousal system activates the “fight-or-flight” mechanics. The SNS gives us the energy we need to live our daily life. It regulates how our cells get oxygen and absorb nutrients. Hence, it’s like the daytime nervous system.

On the other hand, the PSNS controls your sleep, relaxation, and digestion. This system is more active at night as our body regenerates our cells and tissues for the next day.

Both SNS and PSNS are vital and they must be in balance at all times. When you are stressed and can’t deal with it in a constructive way, the SNS is often too high and the PSNS is low. The PSNS controls many systems in the body. When it’s low, those systems are depressed and don’t function optimally. The SNS is like the “gas pedal” in your car, while the PSNS is the “brake pedal” in your car.

Illness, injury, stress, and your ANS

Our body is expected to cope with the stress load placed on it. Stressors such as poor diet, fear, danger, general stress, as well as lack of sleep can lead to the development of degenerative conditions and premature aging. The PSNS is responsible for keeping the stressors under control or maintaining balance.

Dealing with acute or chronic illnesses, old or new injuries, or excessive stresses? Your autonomic nervous system can be out of balance. Come in today and let us assess your ANS and give you a printout of how your SNS and PSNS are functioning. To see how effective your current treatment is, the test can be re-performed over time.

After the assessment, we can determine how much Functional Reserve you have. The Functional Reserve is what your body has in reserve to help you in time of need such as illness, injury, and stress. This gives us an idea of how much therapy your body can tolerate. As improvements are made, additional therapies will be more successful.

What do our tests commonly show?

No matter how hard you diet, how many supplements you take or how much exercise you do, a depressed PSNS will get in the way of these things working to their optimum. A weak PSNS is also a sign of hidden emotional stress.

Monitoring your ANS is extremely helpful in keeping a check on your health status as you progress through our restorative health programs. Feel free to contact Wize Nutrition Therapy of Dunedin, FL today for more information or to schedule an appointment.
